Garbage disposals are inexpensive, sealed units — once the motor, bearings or grinding chamber go, replacement is faster, cheaper and longer-lasting than tearing one apart for a repair. BF Plumbing & Drain installs new disposals and replaces failed ones across North Atlanta, same-day in most cases. We don't repair the unit itself — that's not where the value is — but we do fix everything connected to it: the flange, mounting assembly, dishwasher inlet, trap arm and drain.
Most disposals last 8–12 years. When yours starts humming, leaking from the body, or rattling internally, it's time. We carry common 1/2 HP, 3/4 HP and 1 HP units on the truck so a replacement is usually done in a single visit with new mounting hardware and a fresh dishwasher connection if needed.
When to replace your disposal
We replace — we don't tear the unit open. Here's when replacement is the right call:
- Hums but won't spin — motor or flywheel failure inside a sealed unit.
- Won't turn on even after the internal reset — failed switch or burned-out motor.
- Leaks from the body of the disposal (not the flange or trap) — the housing is cracked or seal is gone.
- Loud rattle, grinding or vibration — broken impeller or worn bearings.
- Persistent foul smell that returns no matter how often you clean it — biofilm has gone into the unit itself.
- Disposal is 8+ years old and already needed one repair — replacement is the better dollar.
Our replacement & install process
Disposal swaps are quick when done in the right order:
- 1
Power-safe disconnect
Breaker pulled or unit unplugged before anything is touched. Old unit removed from the mounting ring and detached from the drain trap and dishwasher inlet.
- 2
Flange & mount inspection
We check the sink flange for corrosion and the mounting hardware for wear. Anything that won't seal cleanly on the new unit gets replaced.
- 3
New unit install
New disposal, new mounting assembly where needed, fresh plumber's putty or gasket at the flange. Dishwasher inlet checked and plugged if not used.
- 4
Drain & trap rebuild
Trap arm and drain tailpiece are rebuilt or replaced if existing is corroded, cross-threaded or undersized. The plumbing to and from the disposal is part of every job.
- 5
Leak & function test
Run the disposal under cold water with normal food load, verify no leaks at every joint, sanitize the area and haul off the old unit.
What disposal replacement costs in North Atlanta
Flat-rate pricing. Variables:
- Unit horsepower — 1/2 HP, 3/4 HP, 1 HP.
- Whether you supply the unit or we do.
- Old mounting style (3-bolt EZ Mount vs. older) — adapter rings may be needed.
- Dishwasher inlet plug-out for new construction connections.
- Trap or drain replacement if existing is corroded or leaking.
- Sink flange replacement if the old one won't seal.
Disposals in North Atlanta kitchens
North Atlanta is a patchwork of housing stock and soil conditions, and that drives a lot of plumbing decisions. Subdivisions built in the 1990s and early 2000s across Canton, Woodstock and Holly Springs typically run builder-grade PVC and CPVC that's now reaching end-of-life on fittings and shutoffs. Older homes in Marietta, Roswell and Kennesaw still have cast-iron drains and copper supply that scale up and pinhole. Newer construction in Acworth, Ball Ground and Cumming sits on red clay that shifts seasonally and stresses underground lines.
We work in this market every day, so we know which neighborhoods have shared sewer easements, which water utilities require a permit pull, and which inspectors want to see specific fittings. That local knowledge shortens the job and keeps it code-correct the first time.

Frequently asked questions
Do you repair the disposal itself?
No. Disposals are sealed units — once the motor or grinding chamber fails, replacement is faster, cheaper and longer-lasting than trying to repair internal components. We do rebuild the plumbing to and from the unit — flange, mount, trap, drain and dishwasher inlet — as part of every job.
What size disposal do I need?
1/2 HP is fine for a single person or couple. 3/4 HP handles a family kitchen. 1 HP is for heavy users and households with septic systems. Bigger motors are also quieter — worth the upgrade.
Can I run a disposal on a septic system?
Yes, with a unit rated for septic use (most premium models). It increases solids to the tank, so pump more frequently.
How long do disposals last?
Average residential life is 8–12 years. Cheap builder-grade units sometimes go 5–7. Heavy-duty 1 HP units run 12–15.
